What should I do in the first 30 seconds?

Open Settings and enable Auto Battle and Auto Catch. Both toggle on at once and let your companion clear spawns while you move toward the next zone.

When do I upgrade from the Crossbow to the Shotgun?

As soon as you can afford it (~900 Coins). The Shotgun out-DPS the Crossbow dramatically and shortens every kill, which compounds your Coin income.

Should I keep capturing Common dinosaurs?

Yes for the first zone — filler captures feed the Jurassic Plains Index and trigger Daily Mission progress. Stop chasing Common spawns once your starter team is full of tank + DPS + support picks.
